Delta has 4 classes of service on international routes: Economy (Main Cabin), Comfort+ (the first several rows of the main cabin), Premium Select and Delta One. I had the opportunity to fly in Premium Select from Atlanta to Tokyo and wanted to share that experience with you.
Passengers flying Premium Select on internationally flights are allowed two free checked bags. Passengers also have access to the Sky Priority lanes at the check-in counter and when boarding.
The Seats
Seats in Premium Select offer 19 inches of width, 38 inches of pitch (legroom) and 7 inches of recline. Note – regular economy seats are 18 inches wide with 31 inches of pitch and 4 inches of recline. The seats in Premium Select also have an adjustable leg rest and foot rest. Each seat also has a cup holder and charging ports for your electronic devices. There is also a port for your headphones and a remote control for the in-flight entertainment.
Amenity Kit
Each passenger had an amenity kit at their seat which included the following - a pen, sleep mask, lip balm, toothbrush and tooth paste and ear plugs. In addition to the amenity kit, each seat was prepared with a blanket, memory foam pillow, slippers and noise-cancelling headphones.
In-flight Entertainment
On the seat-back in front of you, there is a 13-inch screen (2-inches larger than the screens in Economy). The free in-flight offerings on Delta Studio are plentiful, with over 1,000 hours of movies, tv shows, podcasts and music.
Food and Beverage
The trip from Atlanta to Tokyo included both a dinner and breakfast service (with a snack served in between). After take-off, the flight crew passed out a snack with beverage service and took our meal selections. I chose the stuffed chicken dish for my dinner. The mid-flight snack was a pizza twist. The breakfast service prior to arriving in Japan included an egg sandwich with a fruit cup and yogurt. Just before landing, the flight crew came through with a piece of chocolate. Overall, the food was quite good for something prepared at 20,000 feet. I arrived in Japan satisfied and was not searching for food immediately upon landing.
The Verdict
For this trip to Japan, a ticket in the Delta One cabin was approximately $14,000. Comparatively, the Premium Select ticket was about $2,700. The price difference between Premium Select and Comfort+ was about $900 and about $1,000 difference with Main Cabin.
Let’s face it, unless someone else is paying, I will likely never fly in Delta One. This specific flight was priced with Premium Select having a 50% premium over Comfort+. That seems rather steep. If it will probably be a full flight, I would splurge for the upgrade to Premium Select. However, if I can get a Comfort+ row to myself (or at least an empty seat beside me), I would likely just reserve Comfort+. I can't imagine making this trip in Main Cabin Economy.
